Amy Novesky is an American children's author and editor based just north of San Francisco, known for lyrical picture-book biographies of women artists, including Me, Frida, Georgia in Hawaii and Girl on a Motorcycle. Her most acclaimed, Cloth Lullaby: The Woven Life of Louise Bourgeois, illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault, traces how a childhood spent mending tapestries beside her mother by a French river threaded its way into Bourgeois's famous steel spider sculptures. When her mother dies, young Louise learns to weave her grief and memory into art. Written in soft, threadlike prose and paired with exquisite fabric-toned illustration, it won the Bologna Ragazzi Award and stands as a tender meditation on mothers, memory and making. Novesky's biographies are a quietly moving introduction to real artists' lives for thoughtful children aged five to nine.
