Anete Melece: a Latvian illustrator and animator whose warm watercolour-and-collage worlds reward slow, imaginative reading.
Anete Melece is a Latvian illustrator, animator and picture-book maker, born in 1983 and now based in Zürich, who studied visual communication at the Art Academy of Latvia and animation in Lucerne. She is best known for The Kiosk, first an award-winning animated short and later a picture book that has been published in more than a dozen countries. Her illustration is warm and characterful, built from watercolour and collage, and it lends a dreamy softness to books such as the translated cloud poetry of Juris Kronbergs's The Book of Clouds. Melece has a gift for gentle whimsy and quiet observation, making her a lovely choice for children who enjoy slow, imaginative books to pore over.
