Aubrey Hartman is an American children's author who lives in California with her husband and three children. Her debut, The Lion of Lark-Hayes Manor, is a middle-grade fantasy about old magic and a winged lion, and her second book, The Undead Fox of Deadwood Forest, was awarded a Newbery Honor. That tale of an undead fox who ushers animal souls to the afterlife shows off the qualities that mark her writing: a warm, direct storyteller's voice, and the rare knack of holding the macabre and the tender in the same hand. Hartman writes for older middle-grade readers who don't shy from big subjects, weaving mortality, grief and self-acceptance into fables that are eerie, funny and finally uplifting, a strong choice for thoughtful nine- to twelve-year-olds.
