Eva Lindström: the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award-winning Swedish picture-book maker whose deadpan, dreamlike stories — like The Bridge — trust children to enjoy mood, oddness and open endings.

Eva Lindström is a Swedish author and illustrator, born in 1952, and one of her country's most celebrated picture-book makers. Trained in Stockholm at Konstfack, she has produced some thirty-five solo titles in a signature register of gentle absurdity, where odd, lost characters wander through pale, perspective-warped landscapes and stories refuse tidy meaning. In The Bridge, a pig looking for a bridge becomes the accidental houseguest of two wolves — no one is eaten, nothing is resolved, and the strangeness is the point. Lindström trusts children to sit with mood, oddness and open endings, blending shrewd humour with dreamlike calm. In 2022 she received the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, the world's largest children's-literature prize, in recognition of an enigmatic, wholly original body of work.
