The shape of it
The shape of this universe.
Poppleton is Cynthia Rylant's early-reader series about a pig who moves from the big city to a small town and discovers friendship, neighbours and the rhythms of slow village life. Originally illustrated by Mark Teague (then later reissued with Schwartz & Wade), the books are short-story collections in the Frog and Toad tradition: three or four episodes per volume, manageable text for newly-independent readers, full-colour illustrations. The tone is warm, slightly dry, and emotionally precise. Seven books in the original run; rediscovered and reprinted by Beach Lane / Simon & Schuster from 2019.
A warmly observed early-reader series in the Frog-and-Toad tradition, Cynthia Rylant doing what she does best for 5–8s.
