The shape of it

The shape of this universe.

Sandra Boynton is the American writer-illustrator whose chunky board books have shaped how American and British toddlers have been read to since the early 1980s. Her cast is mostly farm animals (cows, hippos, pigs, chickens) drawn with thick black outlines, doing slightly absurd things in tight little stories no longer than a few hundred words. The books rhyme, scan properly, and trust babies and toddlers to enjoy actual jokes, Boynton's humour is dry, deadpan, and very funny on the fortieth read-through, which matters. Her catalogue includes some of the most-given baby-shower books in the English-speaking world (Moo Baa La La La, The Going to Bed Book, Hippos Go Berserk) and is a reliable default for nought-to-threes.

The reigning queen of the funny, well-crafted board book, rhythmic, deadpan, and gift-shower ubiquitous for good reason.
