Best children’s books about dinosaurs

Roaring, stomping, giggling dinosaur stories for an EYFS or KS1 topic, plus a few for older fans who never grew out of them.

Dinosaurs are a rite of passage, and a brilliant early-years topic. This is the corpus’s full dinosaur shelf: the stories children ask for again and again, from rhyming romps for the carpet to a comic or two for older fans.

It is a small, hand-picked set rather than a long list, because we would rather show you the dinosaur books worth reading than pad it out. Most sit in EYFS and Key Stage 1, with a couple that stretch up for the child who has memorised every name.

Loud, funny and full of stomp. Exactly what a dinosaur topic should be.

  1. Oh My Oh My Oh Dinosaurs!

A funny dinosaur opposites book for toddlers, with Boynton's usual visual charm and compact rhymes. Useful when a child loves dinosaurs but still needs a simple first-concepts board book rather than factual palaeontology.

  2. Oi Dinosaurs!

The newest mainline Oi story sends Frog, Cat and Dog into prehistoric rhyme territory. It is a very strong fit for dinosaur fans who also enjoy silly wordplay and joining in aloud.

  3. The Girl and the Dinosaur

A lyrical, beautifully illustrated dream-adventure about a lonely girl who builds a dinosaur from bones and wishes it to life. It is gentle, magical and emotionally reassuring, with a classic bedtime-story feel.

  4. Dino Feelings: The Worrysaurus

Worrysaurus loves a picnic but can't stop 'what-iffing', until something small and beautiful shows him another way to look at the world. The go-to picture book for anxious children; widely used in schools and beloved by parents who recognise the spiral themselves.

  5. The Dinosaur that Pooped Christmas!

A wildly silly Christmas picture book built around enormous toilet humour, rhyme and festive chaos. A very strong read-aloud for children who love naughty giggles and broad comic escalation.

  6. Pablo and Splash

A bright, very funny full-colour graphic novel about two opposite-personality penguin best friends accidentally time-travelling to the age of dinosaurs. It is a strong fit for Bunny vs Monkey, Dog Man and InvestiGators readers ready for a gentler but still zippy comic adventure.

  7. The Bad Guys in Do-You-Think-He-Saurus?!

A dinosaur-filled seventh episode that strands the gang in prehistoric danger while keeping everything fast and comic. It is ideal for readers who like silly action, animal teams and cartoon peril.

  8. A Day in the Life of Fossils, Fire and Other Fantastic Finds

A fourth comic-fact volume about discoveries that changed the world, from fossils and fire to penicillin and the James Webb telescope. Best for children who love weird, useful knowledge in quick, funny bursts.
