The shape of it

The shape of this universe.

Max and Chaffy is Jamie Smart's younger graphic novel franchise about Max, a child exploring Animal Island, and Chaffy, one of the tiny round creatures hidden around it. The books are bright, sweet, funny and much gentler than Jamie Smart's higher-chaos comics. Each adventure mixes a simple mystery with searching, friendship, cute creature appeal and a safe sense of discovery. It is an excellent early graphic novel step for children who like visual reading, collectibles, maps, animal friends and little quests that never become too scary.

Jamie Smart: British cartoonist behind Bunny vs Monkey, Looshkin and Max and Chaffy — chaotic, manic, gleefully silly comics that are a reliable gateway into reading for funny-bone 6–10s.
