The series

At a glance.

Narwhal and Jelly is Ben Clanton's early graphic novel series about Narwhal, who is enthusiastic, imaginative and very sure everything will be brilliant, and Jelly, who is more grounded, anxious and quietly funny. Across ten seeded books, the pair explore friendship, superheroes, food, holidays, school, Halloween, sweetness and love, always within a safe, bright underwater world. The books are short, visually generous and very friendly to new readers. They also work well aloud because the character voices are clear and the jokes are gentle enough for younger children.

Reading order

Publication order is a good default because the character dynamic is introduced in Narwhal: Unicorn of the Sea!, but most books can be read independently.

Narwhal and Jelly's gentle underwater friendship

Ten early graphic novels about friendship, imagination, food, school, holidays and gentle undersea silliness.

Narwhal and Jelly works best as one standalone collection because the books are episodic and emotionally consistent rather than plot-progressive. The early books establish the friendship and comic rhythm; later books play with superheroes, food, new friends, holidays, school, Halloween, identity and love without changing the reading level or sensitivity envelope very much. The series is low sensitivity throughout, including the Halloween title, which is more playful than frightening. Its recommendation value is huge for early readers: it offers the satisfaction of a series, the support of comics and the kindness of a very safe friendship world.
