Narwhal opens a school for the whole undersea community. The most community-forward book in the series and the best match for the starting_school reader situation, it finds exactly the right tone for children who are anxious about school, because Narwhal's school is the least threatening place imaginable.

What’s it about?

The story.

Narwhal's School of Awesomeness is the most explicitly educational-adjacent book in the series (educational_value in primary_appeals, science_and_curiosity in deep themes) but Clanton keeps the comedy at full volume throughout: Narwhal as teacher is exactly as chaotically optimistic as Narwhal as everything else. The ensemble_cast in character_setup reflects a wider cast of sea creatures than the duo-focused books, the whole community shows up to learn. The starting_school reader situation tag at 0.55 is the most useful situational tag in the series for caregivers with anxious children: this book's version of school is warm, funny, and low-stakes, which makes it a good companion for children who are worried about what school will actually be like. The conceptual_intensity nudges to 2, the only book in the run where learning is slightly foregrounded.

Ben Clanton

Writer & illustrator · United States

Ben Clanton is an American author-illustrator best known for the Narwhal and Jelly early-graphic-novel series, short, bright friendship comics about an irrepressibly optimistic narwhal and his anxious jellyfish best friend. The series, launched in 2016, has become one of the most reliable early-graphic-novel gateways for ages 6–9, with the same Elephant & Piggie warmth-and-friendship engine in comic form. Clanton also writes and illustrates picture books, including Mo and Beau and a range of other titles. His voice is gentle, gleefully silly and emotionally generous, a strong fit for sensitive readers and for the period between Mo Willems and Dav Pilkey.
