The series

At a glance.

Star Cat is a graphic novel series written by James Turner and illustrated by Yasmin Sheikh. The current seeded books are Star Cat, A Turnip in Time! and Unicorns in Space!, which gives a fair sense of the series' comic priorities: space adventure, time travel, surreal food logic, unicorn nonsense and a crew who operate on cartoon rules. It is science fiction as joke engine rather than hard science, but the format is excellent for readers who need pace, colour, panels and absurd pay-offs.

Reading order

Publication order is recommended because the first book introduces Captain Spacecat and the crew, but the books are comic enough to enjoy as individual adventures.

    Captain Spacecat's ridiculous voyages

Three absurd sci-fi comics involving Captain Spacecat, time travel, turnips, unicorns and space nonsense.

Star Cat works as one standalone comic sci-fi collection. The first book introduces the space-adventure setup; A Turnip in Time! adds time-travel absurdity; and Unicorns in Space! pushes the series further into surreal creature comedy. The series is low sensitivity because the danger is cartoonish and joke-led rather than emotionally meaningful. Its strongest use case is for readers who have already discovered that silly comics can get them reading and now want that same energy in a space setting.
