What’s it about?

The story.

Seahorse is furious. It is a bad day, in a terrible week, in an awful ocean, and nothing, absolutely nothing, is going to make him feel any better. Not his favourite things, not his closest friend, not even the cuddliest bunny. But while Seahorse insists that there is NOTHING anyone can do, a kind octopus keeps quietly trying, offering one gentle thing after another in the pictures around him. Morag Hood balances real, recognisable fury with a very light comic touch, letting Seahorse be as cross as he likes while a friend waits nearby. Bit by bit the storm passes, and the book lands on a reassuring truth: even when you feel your worst, there is usually something, or someone, that can help. Warm, silly and emotionally affirming, this is a perfect read-aloud for talking about big angry feelings, and a comfort to any small reader who has ever had a truly rotten day.

Fit check

Right for your child?

Where it lands by age

A read-aloud sweet spot from about 3 to 6, when tantrums and big angry feelings are most familiar. Early readers of 5 to 7 can tackle the short, repetitive text, and it works well for calm-down conversations.

Why it lands

Why they love it.

Why kids love it

Every child has had a day where NOTHING will help, and Seahorse says it out loud, gloriously. The joke of the octopus quietly trying anyway, and the relief when the anger finally lifts, make children feel seen and gently reassured.

  • Being understood finally
  • Friendship and belonging

Why parents love it

A funny, wise read-aloud that lets a child's fury be real while quietly showing that help is nearby. Morag Hood's spare comic art and repeatable refrain make it a brilliant tool for talking about anger without ever lecturing.

  • Shared humour
  • Beautiful illustrations
  • Conversation starter
