Believing in yourself
Books for confidence and self-esteem
Picture books about the quiet courage of being yourself, trying the hard thing, and taking up a little space.
Confidence isn't loud. In a small child it often looks like a willingness to try, to be seen, to take up a little space. Its absence looks like hanging back, hiding the thing that makes them different, or giving up before they've begun. These picture books, for roughly three to eight, are about that quiet kind of courage.
We've kept clear of the hollow 'believe in yourself' poster and chosen stories where a character actually changes, usually with a bit of humour and a lot of heart: being yourself when it would be easier to blend in, sticking with something hard, discovering that the thing you were embarrassed about might be the best thing about you.
None of them will turn a cautious child bold overnight, but the right one gives a name to what they're feeling, and a picture of who they might become.
How we choose these books
Every list here is shaped by hand. We begin from our catalogue’s structured data, age fit, tone, theme and reading load, then read back through the candidates and keep only the titles that genuinely belong, in an order that helps a child grow into the subject. Nothing is generated and left to stand; a person decides what stays.
