A brisk Scout Camp adventure with waterways, a fleeing merman and a sea-serpent threat. It is one of the more obviously adventure-shaped Hilda tie-ins, with strong appeal for readers who like creature peril kept safely comic.

What’s it about?
The story.
Hilda heads to Scout Camp hoping, unusually, for a fairly normal expedition. Naturally, that does not last. When her map goes missing and she encounters a laughing merman fleeing a dangerous sea serpent, Hilda is pulled into a watery adventure that quickly becomes much stranger than badge work. She has to navigate unfamiliar waterways, unexpected creatures and the possibility that her Sparrow Scouts plans may be ruined entirely. This seventh tie-in shifts the series into a fresh setting while keeping the familiar ingredients: Hilda's curiosity, Twig's companionship, magical creatures, comic danger and a heroine who tries to help before she judges. The pace is lively, the stakes are exciting without becoming too frightening, and the illustrated chapter-book format remains accessible for children moving into longer independent reading.

How it works in school.

Why it lands
Why they love it.
Why kids love it
The specific kick is Scout Camp gone wrong — Hilda hoping for one ordinary expedition and instead ending up in waterways, with a laughing merman, a fleeing sea-serpent and Sparrow Scout plans collapsing around her. The most action-shaped Hilda chapter-book.
- Adventure and freedom
- Animal companions
- Surviving danger
- Making a difference
Why parents love it
The Hilda for a child who loves the show's adventure pacing — Scout Camp setting, water creatures, a fast magical-misadventure plot. Late-series tie-in but shows no fatigue. Good gift for a fan who's worked through the earlier books.
- Shared humour
- Quick to read
- Beautiful illustrations
- Bedtime appropriate
