A beautifully restrained first board book that gives babies and toddlers a farm as a calm imaginative space. It has Jon Klassen's stillness and visual wit, but in a much softer, first-library form.

What’s it about?

The story.

This is your farm: a quiet, contained place with animals, a farmhouse, a field, and the gentle feeling that everything on the page is waiting for the child to notice it. Jon Klassen pares the board-book experience down to simple naming, soft atmosphere, and lightly surreal ownership: the farm belongs to the reader, and the reader can imagine what might happen there. There is no busy plot, no loud lesson, and no comic twist in the style of Klassen's hat books. Instead, Your Farm works as a calm first-world book, giving very young children a place to look around, name things, and return to. The muted art, small details, and bedtime-friendly rhythm make it especially appealing as a gift for design-conscious families.

Jon Klassen

Writer & illustrator · Canada · b. 1981

Jon Klassen is a Canadian author-illustrator born in 1981 in Niagara Falls, Ontario, whose flat, deadpan, almost cinematic picture books have become one of the most distinctive visual signatures in contemporary children's publishing. He won the Caldecott Medal for This Is Not My Hat (2013), making him the first illustrator to win both the Caldecott and the Greenaway, after a Caldecott Honor for I Want My Hat Back. His Hat Trilogy (I Want My Hat Back, This Is Not My Hat, We Found a Hat) is darkly funny in a Coen-brothers register that adults love almost as much as the children listening. He also frequently collaborates with Mac Barnett (Sam and Dave Dig a Hole, the Shape Trilogy, Extra Yarn) and recently released The Rock from the Sky and The Skull.
